    [Guide] Flashing ROMS/KERNELS/RADIOS [Video/Pics]

I thought I'd take some screen shots of Clockwork Mod Recovery and show you how I flash ROMS and KERNELS...

To each his/her own...I may be doing things differently then others...I may take extra steps...I may be doing more/less than I should. BUT I have yet to encounter any issues doing things the way I will show you here in this thread.

Theres two methods for flashing ROM's

    1)ROM Manager

    2)ClockworkMod Recovery

I STRONGLY suggest you flash through Recovery! Some will argue with me but I don't believe ROM Manager does a thorough wipe and it will lead to problems.

So for starters when you open ROM Manager you will see this:

I always like to start things off by hitting the "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" at the top...Don't know why or what but I just do...

EASY METHOD OF INSTALLING ROM is straight from the GUI
1.Click on "Install ROM from SD Card"

2.Choose the ROM that's on your SD Card

3.Depending on the ROM developer and if you are upgrading or changing to a completely new ROM you will want to "Wipe Data and Cache" and yes if you haven't done so already make a Nandroid or "Backup Existing ROM"

That's it! Just sit back and let it do it's thing...

Now I'll show you the Recovery way:preferred way!

Press on "Reboot into Recovery" and you'll see a box appear like this:

That should bring you to the Manual Interface that looks like this:

Use the Vol up/down to move the highlighted bar and power button to select

Each action has a confirmation, you'll see a screen that asks if you want to do what you had previously selected and you'll see:
    -no
    -no
    -no
    -Yes-(desired action)
    -no
    -++++go back+++

So you have to confirm most if not all your actions this way.

-wipe data/factory reset(WARNING this will erase all your data!) but if you are flashing a new ROM (as in no previous versions have been flashed before) its best if you start with a clean slate(if flashing updates to existing ROM's ie BAMF 1.6.1 to1.6.2 this step can be skipped). So make sure you have a back up prior!

    After this has completed
    -wipe cache partition

Now go to -mounts and storage

    Format the following
    /cache
    /data
    /system

NOW go back to main menu
    Then down to -advanced

Go down to -Wipe Dalvik Cache (REPEAT THIS STEP 2-3 TIMES)

OK Now we've prepared the phone for the new ROM lets go back to the main menu and
    Select "-install zip from sdcard"

Then go to "-choose zip from sdcard"

Scroll down to the .zip you want to install:

Yes you want to install it:

Now it should begin to install the file and when its done you may have to select "go back" then "reboot"

KERNEL and Custom Themes Flash Guide

KERNEL's are flashed in the same way you would flash a ROM

Prior to KERNEL Manager you would download a KERNEL and it would be a zip file

Place the KERNEL.zip on your sdcard

    Reboot into RECOVERY

and scroll down to -install zip from sdcard

But after this thread was created an APP was made called "Kernel Manager" and it works relatively well.

Sometimes if not often Theme developers will design custom framework such as different clocks/battery indicators/skins etc and they too will be a zip file...Flash them using this method too!

Might be stupid question, but does flashing a new ROM wipe the phone like when I rooted?

It is not always necessary to wipe before flashing a new ROM. You should read the ROM creators instructions on what to do. But if you are having problems after flash, the first thing you should do is wipe and reflash if you didn't wipe before.

You should always BACKUP using ROM Manager before starting any work on a new flash.
