noob questions about rooting

If so, can someone plz provide a link.

What is rooting?

What are the pros and cons of this?

I (Stupidly prob) paid a bunch of $ for my phone insurance already. I know rooting voids the warranty. Would it also void my insurance?

I will mainly be using my phone for texting, tweeting, email, internet and music. Prob play a few games here and there. Pretty basic stuff...do I really need to root?
