An early TB user frustrated. Can I have firmware 2.11.605.19 and root?

I bought my HTC Thunderbolt from Verizon about a month after it went on sale. I rooted early but got frustrated with the recent random shut downs so I put my TB back to stock and did an OTA which brought me to firmware number 2.11.605.19 . I am looking for a way to now root without losing my update. I use my TB for RDP to many servers as I am in IT. I have many tools and want to restore from backup but ROM manager needs root. Is there a simple or slightly complicated way to do this.

I attempted to utilize the ThunderboltTool. I chose option 1, Root and S off but still get "You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function." Tried Thunderbolt tool again and now there is no root option. Number 1 is unroot. I will try again tonight in case I missed something.

Try "S-OFF but no root?" In the extras menu.

Thanks! Using the "S-OFF but no root" got me to a point where I could choose Clockwork to restore my programs.
The regular "restore" brought me back to square 1 with the old software version1.12.605.6. If I wanted to unroot do an OTA and then put my programs back what choices on the "Advanced restore would I pick?

The restore or advanced restore options just restore a nandroid backup of your phone. Whatever state your phone was in when you made the backup will be restored exactly like it was.

I can't find a firmware number in menu/settings/about phone/software information. It isn't listed. It does have build number and software number as 1.12.605.6 but I started with firmware 2.11.605.19 after unrooting, going to stock and doing an OTA. Is there no way to leave the fimrware alone and just reload the software after rooting? The whole point to my effort is to update the firmware to something recent without losing everything else. When I'm rooted on ROM Manager under check for ROM updates it says "Your ROM is not set up to receive OTA Updates. Please contact the ROM developer."

The Thunderbolt tools works great. Nice program. I have rooted and unrooted about 5 times in the last couple of days.

I guess another way of stating what I am trying to do would be:
I want to install the latest Verizon Thunderbolt (OTA or otherwise) firmware update without having to lose my programs and settings. I would just leave the stock firmware if it would stop randomly shutting down although I'm guessing newer versions improve battery time. Perhaps it is not possible.
